Allopurinol

Allopurinol is a prescription drug that helps lower the uric acid in the body. It is used for:

  • Long-term management and prevention of chronic gout
  • Prevention of certain types of kidney stones due to uric acid build-up
  • Reducing uric acid formation when a build-up is predictable
  • Treatment of enzyme disorders that results in the overproduction of uric acid

Allopurinol belongs to the group of drug known as xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It works by reducing the production of uric acid in the body. Excessive level of uric acid in the blood is produced by xanthine oxidase enzyme.  The uric acid forms crystals in joints and tissues causing pain and inflammation. It can also cause kidney stones and other kidney diseases.
