What Condition Does Clobetasol Treat and Its Price?

Clobetasol is a prescription used in adults to treat a variety of skin conditions. This is a very strong corticosteroid and is already approved by FDA. Clobetasol helps lessen itching and pain caused by certain skin conditions.

What condition does Clobetasol treat?

Clobetasol is prescribed by most doctors for the treatment of skin conditions such as:

This remedy is classed as a very potent topical corticosteroid. This is used in addition to moisturizers for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions. Clobetasol relieves the symptoms of a flare-up by decreasing the redness, itching, and inflammation. Though this might not be the cure, but this will help relieve the symptoms.

How Does Clobetasol Work?

Clobetasol works by stopping skin cells from releasing several inflammatory substances. It makes blood vessels widen and causes the skin to become painful, itchy, swollen, and red. It decreases the itching, redness, and swelling and so helps prevent scratching that can further irritate the skin.

It may take about one to three days for this medication to start working. You may see improvement in certain symptoms such as itching, redness, or inflammation.

What is the Dosage of Clobetasol?

Clobetasol comes as an ointment for topical application only. This is applied to the areas of skin that are inflamed. The amount of Clobetasol that you will apply to the affected area is given by your doctor. Your doctor will tell you as well how often you will apply the medication. Keep in mind that it must not be applied more than twice a day and once a day is often enough.  After applying, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly.

If you are using this for the treatment of psoriasis, be sure to follow carefully the instructions given by your doctor. It should not be used for large areas of psoriasis or long periods. It can cause your symptoms to flare up again afterward. Also, if you are using more than one topical corticosteroid, be sure that you know when and where to use each one. If you are not sure about it, ask your pharmacist or check with your doctor for further advice.

For the best benefit from this medication, you may follow these:

  • Apply the moisturizer first if you are using a moisturizer along with Clobetasol. Before applying the ointment, wait for at least 10-15 minutes. The moisturizer will be absorbed before the topical corticosteroid is applied.
  • Do not use Clobetasol on your face unless it is the area you are treating. Do not apply a dressing or bandage to the area being treated. It will increase absorption of the preparation and increase the risk of side-effects.
  • Continue to use Clobetasol until the flare-up is controlled. A course of treatment for 7-14 days is usually enough. If your symptoms have not improved after this time, speak again with your doctor.
  • After you finish using Clobetasol, continue to use your moisturizer every day. This will help to avoid an additional flare-up. Your doctor might similarly recommend a less effective steroid ointment for you to use when necessary.

Risk Reduction and Precautions Before Using Clobetasol

  • If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you need to consult your doctor before using this remedy.
  • Inform your pharmacist if you are taking medications for HIV or fungal infection.
  • Do not use or apply cosmetics or other skincare products on the treated areas.
  • Do not use this if you ever had an allergic reaction before. If you have any other allergies, let your doctor know.
  • This prescription is not recommended for use in children unless if it is recommended by a skin specialist. The concern is for children who need frequent courses, as it can have an effect on their growth and this will need to be monitored. If your child has been prescribed this remedy, follow all the instructions given very carefully. Do not use it for longer than you have been told to. As a general rule, it should not be used for more than five days in children.
