Bromocriptine Mesylate

Bromocriptine is a prescription dopamine agonist drug that blocks the release of hormones from the pituitary gland called prolactin. It is used to treat conditions like Parkinson’s disease, pituitary tumor, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and several other conditions. It comes in an oral tablet form and is available as a brand-name and as a generic drug.

What condition does Bromocriptine treat?

Bromocriptine is used for:

  • Reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease but it won’t cure it.
  • High levels of prolactin in the body that suppresses the sexual glands leading to infertility or abnormal milk production.
  • Treating benign breast disease or breast pain that happens during a certain time s of the menstrual cycle.
  • Infertility
  • Excess production of growth hormone that results in enlarged facial features, hands, and feet. It is used alone or in combination with other medications.
  • Stopping or preventing milk production after childbirth, abortion, or miscarriage due to medical reasons.

  • Reducing symptoms of high levels of prolactin including lack of menstrual period discharges from the nipples and low levels of hormone that stimulates sexual function
  • Controlling the blood sugar level in people with type 2 diabetes.

How does Bromocriptine work?

As a dopamine agonist, this drug works by stimulating the dopamine receptors in the brain and this could have several results:

  1. Decrease the production of prolactin from the pituitary gland
  2. Stops milk production
  3. Improve infertility, menstrual disorders, breast pain
  4. Suppression of the sexual glands
  5. Lessen the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
  6. Decrease production of growth hormones from the pituitary glands.

What is the dosage of Bromocriptine?

  • Acromegaly: Take 1.25 mg to 2.5 mg a day for 3 days before bedtime with a snack. Another 1.25 mg to 2.5 mg may be added every 3 to 7 days or until maximum benefits are achieved.
  • Parkinson’s disease: Take 1.25 mg to two times a day with meals for 14 to 28 days. Your doctor may increase your dose to 2.5mg daily. Do not exceed 100 mg in a day. Take it until a maximum therapeutic response is achieved.
  • Infertility, male hormone problems, and pituitary tumor:
  • Adult and children 16 years of age:25 mg to 2.5 mg once a day. Your dose may be increased to by 2.5 mg every 2 to 7 days as tolerated and needed.
  • Children 11 to 15 years of age: The initial dose is 1.25 mg a day. The dose may be increased as needed but should not exceed 10 mg a day.
  • Diabetes: Take 0.8 mg as an initial dose two hours after waking up. Your dose may be increased as needed but should not exceed more than 4.8 mg per day.
  • Premenstrual syndrome: Take 2.5 mg to 7.5 mg from day 10 of the menstrual cycle until the onset of menstruation
  • Excess production of prolactin:
    • Adult and children ages 16 years and older: Take 1.25 to 2.5 mg a day. You may increase your dose to by 2.5 mg every two to seven days. The maximum recommended dose is 15mg a day.
    • Children 11 to 15 years old: Take 1.25 to 2.5 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose as needed. The maximum recommended dose is 10 mg a day.

How to take Bromocriptine?

  • Bromocriptine comes in a tablet form to take by mouth. Always take it with food.
  • Take Bromocriptine exactly as directed. It comes with a risk if you will not take it as prescribed. If you take too much, you could have a dangerous level of drug in your body. If you suddenly stop taking it, your condition will not improve. It may even get worse.
  • It’s a good choice medication for Parkinson’s disease as it raises the dopamine levels differently than other medications. However, you need to take this along with other Parkinson’s medications.

What are the precautions in taking Bromocriptine?

  • Use Bromocriptine with care in patients with:
    • History of psychiatric illness
    • History of peptic ulcers
    • Decreased liver function
    • Heart problems
    • Porphyrias, a hereditary blood disorders
    • Narrowing of the blood vessels in the hands causing painful fingers and numbness
  • Do not use in patients with:
    • Allergy to ergot alkaloids
    • Pregnant women with hypertension
    • Children below 15 years old
    • Heart valve disorder
    • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
    • History of disease involving the heart and blood vessels
    • Women with high blood pressure immediately after childbirth
  • Do not use this drug in treating type 1diabetes.
  • This drug may help control your condition but it won’t cure it.
  • It may take some time for you to notice the full benefit. Do not stop taking this medication without informing your doctor.
  • Some people may experience low blood pressure in the first few days of treatment. In this case, avoid doing activities that can be potentially hazardous.
  • Bromocriptine can cause sleepiness. In rare cases, an onset of sleep during daily activity without any warning signs. Exercise caution when performing hazardous activities like driving. Sleepiness and dizziness can be made worse when you drink alcoholic beverages.
  • This drug can cause stomach or intestinal ulcers. You should inform your doctor if you experience symptoms like vomiting, nausea, blood in the stool, and indigestion.
  • If you are using this drug in treating high levels of prolactin, see to it that you consult with your doctor before the treatment. Your doctor will have to further investigate and exclude the possibility of a tumor.
  • Women who are taking this medicine for breast pain or disease are investigated for the possibility of breast cancer.
  • An adverse reaction may happen to women who are taking this to stop milk production. Adverse reactions may include heart attack, seizure, stroke, high blood pressure, and psychiatric disorder.
  • It may cause intense urges to gamble, binge eating, and uncontrollable sexual activity. If you have any of these symptoms, tell your doctor right away.
